Garden Furniture - Wooden Garden Bench
Prepare the surface
- Remove all loose and flaking paint by scraping or carefully brushing with a stiff metal wire brush. Going with the grain of the wood unnecessary scoring of the wood.
- Sand rough edges of remaining paint. Refresh surface of weathered wood by sanding with a fine/medium grit paper.
- Dull any glossy paint by sanding with fine grit sandpaper.
- Treat any mildew with a 3:1 water:household bleach mixture, leaving it on for 20 minutes and adding more as it dries. Wear eye and skin protection & rinse thoroughly.
- Remove any remaining dirt to ensure the wood surfaces are clean and ready for painting.
Note: during all these steps we recommend wearing eye protection, work gloves and a dust mask
Priming
- Prime area where old paint has come off. For best results, prime entire job
- Use top quality exterior stain blocking latex or oil based wood primer. (Use oil primer if furniture has build up of old oil based paint)
Painting
- Use a good quality paint and ensure you choose a product recommended for use on outdoor furniture.
- Apply paint following the instructions on the tin.
- Remember it is easier to take time to apply two thin coats of paint than to apply one thick coat and deal with the dribbles and runs!
